The renowned sannyasi and exalted spiritual master, who at the advanced age of 69 revolutionized hearts worldwide through boundless love, deep reverence, and unmatched dedication to Lord Krishna. He presented the timeless glory of Indian Vedic civilization to every corner of the globe, establishing a new era of bhakti that continues to inspire millions.
Glorious Srila Prabhupada – whose divine mercy and tireless preaching have made Krishna accessible to all souls.
At this critical time, His Divine Grace Abhay Charanaravinda Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada appeared in 1896 in Calcutta to revive and spread the message of Supreme Lord Sri Krishna globally. In his later years, despite personal hardships, he fearlessly carried Sanatan Dharma to every nation.
India has produced many great saints, but Srila Prabhupada stands supreme – making bhakti easy, joyful, and available to every living being. Today, thanks to his divine mercy, Krishna devotees exist in every land – from America and Europe to Arab countries, China, Taiwan, Japan – with Lord Jagannath Rath Yatras celebrated worldwide. Families from children to elders now embrace Krishna as the center of life.
Born in 1896 in Calcutta, Srila Prabhupada met his spiritual master, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Goswami Prabhupada, in 1922. This great acharya, founder of 64 Gaudiya Math branches, recognized the young man's potential and urged him to preach Vedic knowledge in English to the West. Deeply inspired, Srila Prabhupada took formal initiation in 1933 in Allahabad. In their first meeting, his guru requested propagation of Vedic wisdom in English – a command Srila Prabhupada fulfilled with extraordinary dedication.
Later, he authored commentaries on Bhagavad-gita, launched the "Back to Godhead" magazine in 1944 single-handedly, and received the title 'Bhaktivedanta' for his profound devotion and scholarship. At 54, he retired from family life; in Vanaprastha, he intensified study and writing.
In 1959, he accepted the renounced order of sannyasa – the pinnacle of spiritual life. There, he began his monumental work: translating and commenting on the 18,000-verse Srimad Bhagavatam in English, along with "Easy Journey to Other Planets". His determination in such austere surroundings exemplifies unmatched surrender to guru and Krishna – glorifying him inspires us to deepen our own devotion.
Despite two heart attacks en route, his resolve never wavered. In his diary, he prayed: “O Krishna, I do not know what is in Your mind... but if You have sent me, there must be a plan. Make me Your puppet and let me dance as You desire.” From that moment until his departure, he produced authoritative translations and commentaries on India's sacred texts.
In July 1966, after immense struggle, he founded the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON). Under his expert guidance, it expanded in just over a decade to 108 temples, ashrams, schools, farms, and communities worldwide.
His greatest gift: books of unparalleled authenticity, used as textbooks in universities, translated into 80+ languages. The Bhaktivedanta Book Trust (BBT), established in 1972, became the world's largest publisher of spiritual literature, distributing crores of Bhagavad-gita As It Is.
In his final decade, despite old age and health challenges, Srila Prabhupada circled the globe 14 times, lecturing, meeting leaders, and inspiring devotion. Rarely does such a personality appear – one who accomplishes far beyond ordinary imagination. He is the Founder-Acharya of ISKCON, His Divine Grace A.C.
